Description
The structure consists of a set of 12 piers and a low wall that originally supported railings, located around the Castle precinct to the south of the Castle. This feature dates from the early 19th century and is constructed from sandstone ashlar. The piers are octagonal in shape and topped with a faceted pointed cap above a pronounced string course. Near the center of the south side, there is a pair of piers that originally flanked an iron gate. These piers and wall were placed to mark the boundary of Castle Park, which was laid out on and near the castle ditch. Although not shown on Binns' map of 1821, they are clearly depicted on the Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1845.
