Description
Barum House is a house located on the north side of The Square in Barnstaple. It was built in the early 18th century, with some additions made in the late 19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a slated roof, with rendered chimneys on each gable end and red brick chimneys positioned just behind the center of the ridge and on the rear gable of the wing.
The house is likely double-fronted and consists of two rooms deep, with a late 19th-century rear wing on the right side. It stands two storeys high and has a six-window range, flanked by giant pilasters, each topped with a section of triglyphed frieze. The boxed eaves cornice breaks forward above the frieze. The ground storey has been altered in the late 19th century.
The central doorway is sheltered by a deep glazed porch, which is supported at the front by cast-iron columns with enriched capitals. On either side of the doorway are flat-topped canted bay windows. The upper-storey windows feature plain sashes in box-frames, while the side elevation facing Diamond Street has sashes with margin-panes. The interior has not been inspected.
