Description

The Birmingham Midshires Building Society is a house that has been converted into offices, likely built in the early to mid 18th century, with some alterations made in the early to mid 19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a steeply pitched hipped roof covered with slates. Its plan is L-shaped, with one-room-deep sections facing south and west. An old photograph shows that the entrance was originally located in the center of the south front.

The building stands three storeys tall with an attic, and each of the two fronts has a range of three windows. The ground floor has been completely altered with late 20th century display windows. The upper-storey windows are 6-paned sashes set in box frames, with the center windows on each front being blind. The south-facing front is accentuated by full-height flanking pilasters and features a bracketed eaves cornice that continues onto the return front to the right, which also has a blind window on each storey. A hipped dormer with 2-paned sashes and a boxed eaves cornice faces south, along with late 20th century dormers on the hips at either end.

The interior was only inspected on the ground floor, which has been entirely altered in the late 20th century, and the upper floors are also reported to have been changed. The building is included for its group value.
