Description
Leytown is a tenement farmhouse, likely built in the early 18th century and extended at the rear in the early 20th century. The building features painted roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that has a gable end on the right and is half-hipped at the left end. There are rendered stacks at both ends; the left stack is from the 20th century, while the right stack includes a bread oven projection.
The farmhouse has a 2-room plan, with direct entry into the larger right-hand room. This room originally had a staircase running from back to front, but it was reversed in the 20th century and is now located immediately to the left of the entrance. The left-hand room was formerly unheated and divided into two smaller rooms, likely serving as a cellar or pantry. An early 20th-century gable-ended two-storey rear kitchen wing creates an overall T-shaped plan.
The exterior is two storeys high with a three-window range. The upper storey features early 19th-century three-light casements with rectangular leaded panes. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century two-light window to the left and a three-light window to the right of a 20th-century lean-to porch and doorway.
Inside, the farmhouse was undergoing alterations at the time of the survey in July 1986. The right-hand room contains an unchamfered fireplace lintel and a bread oven, while the chamber above has a roughly chamfered scroll-stopped fireplace lintel. The building also features roughly pegged A-frame trusses with pegged lapped collars.
