Description
Myrtle Cottage is a late 18th-century cottage located on Leigh Road in Chulmleigh. It is constructed of painted rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a hipped thatch roof and featuring two brick stacks at the rear. The original plan likely consisted of two rooms with a cross-passage, although 20th-century alterations have obscured this layout. Each room was heated by a fireplace located on the rear wall, and there may have been a small unheated scullery or pantry at the left end. The stairs have been relocated to a 20th-century rear outshut.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window range. It features 19th-century three-light casements on either side of a small single-light window in the Gothick style, which has a four-centred head. A large lean-to porch with thatch has been added in the 20th century, along with new windows on the ground floor. The interior has been significantly altered in the 20th century, with fireplaces that have thin cambered timber lintels.
