Description

Mid Devon House is a house that likely dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with some remodelling in the late 19th century. It is constructed from joint-lined rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends. The building has a brick stack at the right end, which includes dog tooth coursing, and a rebuilt brick stack at the rear that heats the left-hand room.

The layout includes a principal front room on each side of the entrance passage, which contains the staircase. The larger room on the left is heated by the rear brick stack and has a single-storey kitchen outshut at the back. A chamber at the left end extends over a carriageway that leads to a rear courtyard. This courtyard features an L-shaped range of outbuildings that extend along the left side and return along the rear boundary wall.

The exterior of Mid Devon House is two storeys high with a three-window range. The windows are all late 19th century or early 20th century four-paned sashes with hoodmoulds and deep chamfered sills. To the left of the four-panelled door, which has a bracketed lean-to canopy, there is a tripartite sash window. Double plank doors at the left end provide access to the cobbled carriageway leading to the rear courtyard. The outbuildings on the left side feature external steps leading to a loft at the front end and a twin segmental arched sash window on the ground floor.

Inside, aside from some alterations to the fireplaces in the principal rooms, the 19th-century joinery, including panelled doors, the staircase, and integral cupboards, remains intact. The entrance passage has a patterned tiled floor.
