Description

This is a house, probably dating from the early 19th century, which was later divided into two separate dwellings in the late 19th century. The construction is of rendered stone rubble and cob, with an asbestos slate roof and gable ends. There are rear lateral stacks to each of the principal rooms; the stack on the left was rebuilt in the 20th century, while the one on the right retains two clay posts. A rendered brick stack is located at the left gable end. The house was originally planned with a large principal room on each side of the entrance stairhall. A division was made on the right side to create two dwellings, with an additional entrance added at the left end. A kitchen wing extends to the rear of the right side, and stables and a coach house are attached to the rear. To the rear left is an entrance gateway and barn.

The exterior is two storeys high with a virtually symmetrical five-window front. The 19th-century windows remain intact, with the upper floor windows containing 12 panes, and the ground floor windows containing 8 panes, all with segmental arches. A central flat-roofed porch features plain pilasters and 20th-century doors. A doorway at the left end has decorative carved console brackets supporting a moulded canopy, and a 20th-century door is located between the two left-hand windows.

The interior of Ivyside (the right-hand dwelling) retains almost all of its original 19th-century joinery, including six-panelled doors, a staircase with a ramped handrail and stick balusters, and moulded cornices in the principal room and chamber. Higher Ivyside has been extensively altered in the 20th century. The stable fittings at the rear of Ivyside are complete, featuring two stalls with segmental arches supported on chamfered posts with moulded capitals.
