Description

Rose Cottage, West Ramilies, and The Old Smithy are a group of three adjoining cottages, likely dating from the 18th century, with 20th-century alterations. They are built of painted rendered stone rubble and cob, and have thatched roofs with gable ends. A back shaft is present at the right gable end, with a stone rubble stack and a ridge brick stack.

The interiors of The Old Smithy (on the left) and West Ramilies (in the centre) were substantially altered in the 20th century. They were likely originally small, two-room cottages, with The Old Smithy having an additional bay at the left end. This bay formerly had a wide entrance doorway, now blocked, which led to the smithy. Rose Cottage (on the right) retains a two-room plan, with a staircase between the rooms, and direct entry into both rooms; the left-hand room was formerly a workshop.

The exterior of Rose Cottage is the least altered and features a three-window range with a two-light casement window with two panes per light on the left and a three-light casement window with two panes per light serving the stairwell on the right. Plank doors are positioned to the left and right of the stairwell window. West Ramilies has a two-window range, with two-light casement windows, three panes per light, to the left of a 20th-century porch with a gabled thatched roof on each floor. The Old Smithy has a three-window range, largely retaining 19th-century fenestration of two- and three-light casements, with three panes per light, except for a 20th-century three-light window on the ground floor at the left end. A 20th-century door and double garage doors are located at the left end. The interiors were not inspected.
