Description
69 and 70 High Street are two houses, which were formerly part of a shop, likely built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of painted Flemish bond brick and topped with a slate roof, featuring a brick chimney stack.
The buildings have a double depth plan, with each house being one room wide. They are two storeys tall and have an asymmetrical front with two windows, with No. 69 located to the left. The deep eaves are complemented by a boxed eaves cornice. The houses share adjacent front doorways in the center, each requiring a step up. The doorways feature a double timber doorcase with pilasters, panelled reveals, and panelled front doors, topped with an entablature that has a moulded cornice. This entablature extends across most of the front of No. 70, which has a ground floor sixteen-pane hornless sash window. To the right of this, No. 69 has a matching sixteen-pane ground floor sash. On the first floor, No. 70 has an original tripartite sash window, with twelve panes in the center and four panes in each outer light. There is a similar window on the first floor to the left of No. 60, which also features a sixteen-pane hornless timber sash above the front door.
The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
