Description

The Duke of York Public House is a public house located on High Street in Crediton, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with a late 19th-century pub front and carriage doorway. The building is roughcast with a slate roof and has a left end stack with a brick shaft. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall.

The exterior features an asymmetrical two-window front with projecting sprocketted eaves supported by small paired brackets. To the left is a carriageway entrance, while to the right is a symmetrical entrance to the bar, which includes a central doorway flanked by windows. The door and windows are framed by pilasters that have reeded sections above the capitals and a moulded cornice. Below the cornice, the fascia angles inwards towards the window recess. The central half-glazed pub door has fielded panels and a narrow overlight, with two-light plate glass windows on either side featuring high transoms. The front wall cants out below the windows.

The carriage entrance is flanked by timber pilasters topped with an entablature that has a dentil cornice, and it features boarded doors, one of which has a wicket. The first floor has two widely spaced early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows. There may be interesting features preserved on the first floor interior.
