Description

No. 77 High Street is a house, likely divided into two, dating from the 1820s. It has a roughcast exterior, a slate roof, and brick chimney stacks. The building has a deep plan, consisting of one room wide with an entrance on the right and a staircase rising to the rear right.

The exterior features three storeys with an asymmetrical two-bay front facing the High Street, displaying regular window arrangements. The hipped slate roof has deep eaves that project above a rounded corner. The bays are separated by plain cement pilasters. The doorway on the right has a recessed five-panel door with panelled reveals and an overlight featuring geometrical glazing bars. The ground and first floors on the left have 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has a 3/6-pane sash. The left side of the building, which overlooks St Lawrence's Green, consists of two bays plus an additional one-bay at the left end, with two ground and two first floor 16-pane sashes, and two second floor 4/8-pane sashes. To the left, the front wall is continued by a ramped wall that fronts a single-storey porch block. The rear elevation includes a tall round-headed stair window, which was reglazed in the 20th century.

Inside, original features remain, including a stick baluster staircase with a mahogany handrail. This house is part of a group with other listed buildings along the High Street, with their rear elevations overlooking a pitched stone service area.
