Description
This is a house, likely dating from the early 19th century, though it probably incorporates an earlier structure. The external walls are roughcast cob, with a slate roof. It features a stack built into the party wall with number 79, and another with a large rendered shaft in the party wall with number 81.
The house has a double-depth plan with two rooms wide and a central staircase. The ground level slopes downwards towards the rear, where the house is an additional storey higher and has rear access to a service yard.
The front of the house is symmetrical, with three bays. A central front door consists of five panels, the lower two being flush. The ground floor windows are 2-pane sashes, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, with margin panes. The first-floor windows are early 19th century 16-pane sashes. The second floor has smaller-pane timber casements, likely from the 20th century. The rear elevation has a mix of sashes and casements, along with 20th-century roof lights. A rear centre storm porch features cob cheeks and a lean-to corrugated iron roof, and a 19th-century four-panel rear door.
Inside, the staircase is boxed, with a short section of balustrade featuring stick balusters and a turned newel post. There is early 19th century joinery throughout. The tall rear elevation contributes to a pleasing group of buildings along the High Street, and the house has group value with the listed buildings on either side of the street.
