Description

Hillworth House is a circa 1840 building, likely originating as a smaller early 19th-century house. It has undergone later additions and alterations and is now converted into flats. The house is constructed of stucco on a projecting plinth with wide, flat eaves and a slate roof. Originally designed symmetrically, it features flanking gabled wings.

The entrance front of the main block has three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, with a central six-panel door. Above the door is an arched fanlight with a lantern and keystone, a moulded string at the arch's springing, and a surround of two Doric pilasters, cornice, and a blocking course. The gabled wings have bracketed eaves, an arched central window on the first floor, two smaller first-floor windows, and three ground-floor windows, all with sash windows retaining their glazing bars. A later two-storey, rendered wing projects to the east, featuring a hipped slate roof, shallow eaves, five first-floor windows with recessed sashes and intact glazing bars, and block sills. The ground floor of this wing has three windows and two doors recessed within semi-circular arched openings, with four-panel doors and semi-circular fanlights.

The garden front echoes the design of the entrance front, though the windows have been altered. A tent-roofed verandah and a fine conservatory with cast iron columns are also present. The house is set within extensive gardens, including some fine trees, which now serve as a public park.
