Description

Hillworth Cottages is a pair of early 19th century houses located on Hillworth Road, set back from the corner with Long Street. The buildings are two storeys tall, constructed of red brick with a rendered front facing Hillworth Road, resting on a projecting painted stone plinth. They feature a moulded stone cornice and a blocking course, topped with a hipped slate roof.

On the front elevation facing Hillworth Road, there are two windows on the first floor, which are recessed sashes with intact glazing bars and slightly cambered heads, sitting on block sills. The ground floor of No 1 has a large sash window with glazing bars. The doors are positioned beneath the inner windows, recessed and consisting of six fielded panels, topped with semi-circular fanlights featuring radial glazing bars. The doors have architrave surrounds, with stepped imposts to the arches and keystones above. There are also cellar gratings and door scrapers present.

The side elevation of No 1 facing Long Street has a cornice that returns without a blocking course. On the first floor, there are two sash windows with intact glazing bars and segmental brick arches. The ground floor features one similar window on the left and a 19th century canted bay window on the right with three lights, which has later glazing bars, a moulded cornice, and a flat lead roof. No 2 has undergone later 19th century alterations to its side and rear.
