Description
4 and 6 Bank Street are a pair of attached houses with shops, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with later alterations from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of brick, with pebbledash at the ground floor, and slate-hung and painted above. They feature a flipped scantle slate roof and an axial stack with a brick shaft. Each house has a double depth plan, consisting of one room at the front and rear, with a central stairwell. In the late 19th century, a shop was added to the ground floor of each house. The doorways are located to the left, with the front rooms to the right.
The exterior has three storeys and a nearly symmetrical two-window front, with No 4 on the left and No 6 on the right. No 4 features a recessed half-glazed door with panelled reveals and a panelled overlight, flanked by pilasters and topped with a cornice. To the right, there is a large plate-glass window set in an eared architrave. No 6 has a panelled and glazed door with an overlight, also flanked by pilasters and topped with a cornice. To the right, there is a large 19th-century six-pane shop window with a panelled stall riser, fascia, and cornice.
On the first floor, No 4 has an 18th-century twelve-pane sash window with sidelights to the left, and a 19th-century canted bay window to the right with a four-pane sash and sidelights. The second floor features two 18th-century nine-pane sash windows with sidelights and a modillion cornice. The right side of the building is painted brick at the ground floor, while the first and second floors are slate-hung. The ground floor includes a blind window, a six-panelled door, and a sixteen-pane sash, along with an eight-pane cellar light. The first floor has two sixteen-pane sashes, and the second floor has a twelve-pane sash and a sixteen-pane sash. There is a single-storey 20th-century addition to the right with a window.
The rear of the buildings is slate-hung and features sash windows on the first and second floors. Inside, No 6 retains a dog-leg stair with a moulded handrail, columnar newels, and stick balusters. The rear room on the second floor includes a fireplace with a 19th-century cast iron grate.
