Description

The St Columb Gallery and Museum, formerly the St Columb Institute, was built in 1874 and has undergone few alterations since. It is constructed of brick with granite dressings, and has a bitumenised slate roof, surmounted by crested ridge tiles and gable ends, with brick stacks. The building is organised around a central entrance hall with large rooms to either side, and a passage through the right end. It is designed in a Gothic style.

The symmetrical facade comprises three bays repeated three times, with the central bays projecting forward beneath a larger gable, topped by smaller gables over each of the three bays to the right and left. The central section features a tall, 2-centred arched doorway with a brick hood mould and double plank doors with ironwork, flanked by 2-centred arched windows with plate-glass sashes. Above, at first floor, are three 2-centred arched lights, the central one taller, with string courses and a recessed quatrefoil containing the date, and a plain stone quatrefoil above. To the left and right, the three bays each have a 2-centred arched doorway and matching plate-glass sashes. The first floor windows above mirror these, with string courses and blind circles. A 2-centred arched doorway to the passage is located at the right end, while the left end features a 4-pane sash window with a segmental arch at ground floor, and two 2-centred arched windows with plate-glass sashes on the first floor. The rear includes a two-storey wing to the left, with a 20th-century glazed door on the first floor and a 4-pane sash with segmental head, along with a dormer window above. The rear of the main range on the right is blank. The interior is not accessible.
