Description
No. 5 Market Place is a house and shop dating from the early to mid-19th century, with later alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with the front hung with asbestos slate. The right side and rear are rendered, and it has a flipped asbestos slate roof with ridge tiles. There is an axial stack with a brick shaft that is shared with the attached house on the left.
The building has a double-depth plan and is double-fronted, featuring a shop at the front with a central entrance and an entrance to the house above on the left side. The exterior is three storeys high and nearly symmetrical, with a three-window front. The ground floor includes a panelled and glazed door with an overlight to the left, and a 19th-century shop front to the right, which has two window bays each with six large panes, along with a central 20th-century door flanked by sidelights and an overlight. There is a plain fascia above the shop front.
On the first floor, there are three 20th-century windows, while the second floor also features three 20th-century six-pane windows. The right side has a 20th-century window at the first floor, and the rear has two 20th-century windows at the first floor and a 19th-century twelve-pane sash window in an exposed box, along with a single 20th-century light on the second floor. The interior has not been inspected.
