Description

The Town Hall, dated 1848 and largely unaltered since, is a prominent building in St Columb Major and an important feature of the townscape. It is constructed of granite ashlar to the front and sides, with stone rubble and granite dressings elsewhere, and has a slate roof behind a parapet. The main front, symmetrical with five bays, faces the Market Place and features a rusticated ashlar ground floor, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. The ground floor includes a recessed doorway flanked by windows, all with round-arched heads featuring voussoirs, keystones, and multi-pane sashes with radiating glazing bars. A round-arched recessed doorway with panelled double doors and fanlight is located to the left, with a similar door recess on the right. A band course runs above the ground floor, followed by a plain frieze with fielded panels, and a moulded cill string to the first-floor windows. Rusticated quoins mark the first floor level. The left entrance front has a plinth and a forward-projecting bay rising to a clock tower, featuring blind bays to either side. A blocked doorway and round-arched window, both with voussoirs and keystones, are located on the first floor of the tower. Datestones bearing the date MDCCCXLVIII are positioned above the frieze. A cornice broken forward over the central bay gives way to a square, rusticated ashlar clock tower with a convex circular granite panel to the front, surmounted by an open cupola with pilasters and round arches on each side. A later 19th-century addition is situated to the right, featuring a 4-panelled door with overlight and a 4-pane sash window at first floor. Further to the right is a 20th-century door with a blocked fanlight, flanked by round-arched windows. The rear elevation has three bays to the left, featuring a blocked central double door with fanlight and round arch, with similar arched windows to either side. A 20th-century external stair leads to a corridor addition with a corrugated asbestos pitched roof. A further addition on the inner side of the right end features a 4-pane sash window to both ground and first floors. The interior is not accessible.
