Description

No 3 is a house and shop located on the north side of Market Place in St Columb Major, dating from the early to mid-19th century, with later alterations from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of slate rubble, rendered at the ground floor, while the first and second floors are slate-hung with rag slates. The left side is also slate-hung, and it features a hipped asbestos slate roof with ridge tiles. An axial stack with a brick shaft is shared with the attached house to the right, No 5.

The building has a double depth plan, with the entrance on the right and rooms located to the front and rear on the left. The shop on the ground floor was likely remodeled in the late 19th century. The exterior consists of three storeys and has a nearly symmetrical three-window front. The ground floor features a 20th-century shop front on the left with three plate-glass windows and a 20th-century door. There is also a 20th-century door on the right, with the ground floor rendered and lined out. A plain fascia runs across the entire front. The first floor is slate-hung and has three late 19th-century four-pane sash windows. The second floor contains a central four-pane sash and early 19th-century 16-pane sashes on the right and left. The left side of the building is fully slate-hung, with a 20th-century six-pane light at the first floor to the left. The wall angles to the left, and the rear faces the churchyard, also slate-hung. The first floor at the rear has a 20th-century glazed door and two single lights, while the second floor features a two-light 20th-century casement and a 19th-century six-pane sash. The interior has not been inspected.
