Description
This group consists of 11 bollards and 2 lamp posts located on the north west side of Union Square, dating from the late 19th century. Made of cast iron, the bollards stand about one metre high and feature slender fluted columns with a circular base. Each bollard has two rectangular blocks on the shaft; the upper block displays either a golden hand holding a silver ball, symbolizing the St Columb hurling, or a shield adorned with 15 besants, which represent the tinners' arms. Acorn finials complete the design, although some bollards have blank blocks. The two lamp posts also have fluted shafts on a moulded base, topped with cross arms and lanterns featuring finials. The arrangement of the bollards and lamp posts enhances the character of the buildings surrounding Union Square.
