Description
These are a pair of semi-detached houses located on Exeter Street, dating from approximately 1830. They were constructed on the site of, and incorporate elements from, a building of the late 18th century. The houses are three storeys high, built of red brick with rusticated flush stone quoins and a flush plinth. They have low-pitched hipped slate roofs with flat bracketed eaves. Each house has one window facing the street.
No. 81 has recessed sash windows on the second floor and ground floor, the ground floor window being framed in wood. The first floor features a large canted bay window with pilasters separating the lights, a panelled apron, and a projecting cornice. No. 82 has a flush-framed sash window on the second floor, and recessed sash windows on the first and ground floors. The ground floor window retains its original frame and shutters, and has intact glazing bars. All windows are finished with flat rubbed brick arches.
Both houses feature unusual reset early 18th-century doorcases. These consist of scrolled ear architraves with elaborate egg and dart and foliage mouldings, a bolection frieze, and a cornice with similar mouldings. Each doorcase contains a six-panel door.
Numbers 81 to 87 form a notable group.
