Description
The Old Bell Inn, also known as St Anne's Garage, is located at the corner of Exeter Street and St Anne's Street. This building features a late 18th-century recasing of a 16th-century timber frame. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of painted brick, topped with a steeply pitched hipped roof covered in old tiles.
The front facing Exeter Street originally had four windows, but two on the upper floors are now blocked. The left side has two-light sliding sash windows with glazing bars, while the right side features 19th-century sashes that are flush framed. The ground floor has a former pilastered doorway that has been converted into a window. The bar entrance, which is set across the corner and splayed above, consists of double doors with two panels and two round-headed lights.
On the St Anne's Street side, there are two windows, one of which is blocked, both being two-light sliding sashes. The door here has four flush panels and a plain hood. There is a two-storey former stable wing along Exeter Street, now used as a garage, which also has an old tile roof. This wing includes a three-light mullioned casement and a hatch on the first floor, along with a 19th-century sash window and garage doors on the ground floor.
The original timber frame building was once jettied on the first and second floors. Inside, the first-floor room features a dragon beam, and the roof retains part of the original structure, including a tie beam, v-braces, and collars. A wall post from the original construction survives in the kitchen.
The Old Bell Inn is part of a group with Nos 2 to 18 (even) St Anne's Street.
