Description
Nos 14 and 14A, The Close, are a pair of 18th-century buildings. They are two storeys and have an attic. The exterior is painted brick set on a stucco plinth, with a moulded string course dividing the floors. A small, moulded wooden eaves cornice runs along the roofline, which is covered in old tiles and features flanking chimneys. A central dormer window is positioned above the front door. The front has five windows on the first floor, with a slight projection containing a central window and door. The door itself is a 10-panel design, set within a panelled reveal and framed by a doorcase with fluted Doric pilasters supporting an entablature incorporating a bracketed cornice and pediment. Access is provided by four moulded stone steps, with early 19th-century guard rails. All windows are fitted with architrave frames.
An extension of the same date and design is located to the left-hand side of the original building and features a single first-floor window. There is a secondary 8-panel door with a similar door surround (lacking the pediment) flanked by two narrow windows. This extension is built into the Close Wall, adjacent to St Anne’s Gate, and has a window facing Exeter Street. The east front is documented separately under St Anne's Gate.
The interior of No 14A contains fine panelling and a staircase with twisted balusters that sweep around to the foot, with a moulded handrail.
Nos 14, 14A, St Anne’s Gate and No 15 together form a visually distinctive group, and the buildings within The Close as a whole constitute an outstanding group.
