Description
No. 13, The Close is a 17th-century building with later alterations. It is an asymmetrical two-storey and attic structure. The exterior is stuccoed with a projecting plinth and a moulded wooden eaves cornice featuring pairs of brackets spaced approximately three feet apart. The roof is covered in old tiles, and it includes two large gabled dormers; these have plastered faces and tile-hung cheeks, each with a 19th-century two-light casement window. On the first floor are two three-light stone mullioned and transomed casement windows with original iron fittings, positioned under the dormers, along with one four-light window of a similar style, added later. The ground floor features a plain four-panel service door in a moulded frame, alongside a late 18th-century square window. A 17th-century four-panel entrance door is set within a late 18th-century doorcase, characterized by panelled reveals, Doric pilasters, a plain entablature, a small hood and a panelled soffit of five squares. Two late 18th-century windows, each with four panes, are located to the right of the door. The ground floor windows have 18th-century panelled shutters and their fittings. The interior contains two good, small panelled rooms. The context is that the building forms part of a group of listed buildings which together possess outstanding group value.
