Description

Old Bell Cottage, Middle Bell Cottage, and Old Bell House comprise a former inn, dating back to the 17th century, with 18th-century rebuilding and later alterations. The building is in three parts, reflecting different phases of construction. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in an English garden wall bond on the left-hand side, otherwise Flemish bond, with small timber framing to the left gable end. It has gabled plain-tile roofs. The plan is long and rectangular, with a taller, rear wing positioned off-centre.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a seven-window range. There are four entrances: a 20th-century part-glazed door, a four-panelled door in a wooden doorcase, a 20th-century plank door, and a 20th-century garage door, which alternate with canted bay windows. The casement windows in the bay windows are multi-paned, those to the right being metal. The first-floor windows are metal casements with glazing bars in wooden frames, containing one, three, or three lights. Wrought-iron casement fasteners are present. Crown glass is used throughout. A brick dentilled eaves cornice runs along the top. There are three ridge stacks and an external stack on the left-hand side.

The interior of Old Bell Cottage includes a small cupboard with plank doors and butterfly hinges to the entrance hall. It features chamfered beams and plank doors. On the first floor, there is some close-studding in the front and left rooms, while the right room has a jowled stud, tie-beam, brace, curved braces, purlin, and exposed wall plate. Middle Bell Cottage contains an inglenook fireplace.

The buildings on The Green form a group of buildings of group value.
