Description

Newnham Court is a house built in the early 19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a stuccoed brick exterior, a partly-hipped slate roof, and large stuccoed chimney stacks. The building is arranged in a U-shape and has two to three storeys, along with a cellar.

The east front elevation consists of three bays, with the outer bays projecting as full-height canted bay windows. The ground floor windows are 15-pane sashes, while the first floor windows are 12-pane sashes. Between the bay windows is a Doric distyle portico in antis, above which is a similarly styled loggia with an ornate cast iron balustrade. The central entrance features moulded jambs topped with urns on pedestals, a pair of outer and inner half-glazed doors, panelled reveals, and a large traceried fanlight.

Inside, the house is noted for its moulded ceiling cornices and door architraves in the main ground floor rooms. The central hall includes an open well staircase at the rear, which has turned balusters and a wreathed handrail.

On the south side elevation, there is a late 19th-century lean-to verandah with five bays supported by arch-braced chamfered posts; the two western bays are glazed to create a conservatory. The south wing has been extended, and there is an adjoining west wing that encloses a small rear courtyard. In the centre of this courtyard, at the rear of the main entrance, stands a square bell-tower with a large open-sided timber lantern, a pyramidal slate roof, and a weathervane.
