Description

The Ark is a 18th-century building located set back from Long Street, accessible via a lane between Nos 41 and 42. The structure has three storeys and a basement, constructed of red brick with a plinth and stone quoins. It features a hipped slate roof and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The building has a slight central projection with a cornice that is broken forward, topped with an open pediment that has moulded coping, supported by small coupled scroll brackets.

There are five sash windows on the first and second floors, all retaining their glazing bars, with stone sills and moulded stone bolection surrounds. The ground floor has been altered in the early 19th century, featuring a lean-to extension that encloses the original porch, which is supported by Corinthian columns. This extension is also made of red brick on a stone plinth and has two sash windows with intact glazing bars flanking the entrance. Above the doorway is an early 19th-century lantern held by an elaborate iron bracket adorned with clasp leaf ornament.

To the left, there is a two-storey early 19th-century wing made of red brick with a slate roof, which has three blind windows and two sash windows alternating on the first floor, while the ground floor features two tripartite sashes, all with intact glazing bars. On the right side of the main block, there is a blind window on the second floor, two dummy windows on the first floor, and a single-storey extension. The building is set in a beautiful garden with fine trees.
