Description
Part of the Museum, this building dates from the 18th century and is three storeys tall, constructed of red brick on a plinth with stone coping. It features chamfered stone quoins and vertical stone strips that flank a central projection. The building has a moulded dentil stone cornice and a blocking course, with a plain pediment above the centre. The pediment is stuccoed and includes a bullseye window surrounded by stucco with keystones. The hipped slate roof is complemented by five recessed sash windows on the upper floors, which lack glazing bars and are set in moulded stone surrounds. The first-floor windows have an additional frieze and cornice, with the central window featuring a segmental pediment. The ground floor has four similar windows, also with frieze and cornice. The central entrance boasts a six-panel door, which once had a decorative cast iron knocker shaped like a mask and dolphin, set in a moulded stone surround with a cornice and pediment supported by carved scroll brackets. Inside, there is a fine original staircase with two turned balusters per step, and the moulded handrail sweeps up at the top of each flight. The hall, staircase, and first-floor landing are adorned with delicate stucco work friezes. No 41 is part of the Museum and, like No 40, was once part of the school attended by Sir Thomas Lawrence, the President of the Royal Academy. Nos 31 to 42 form a cohesive group.
