Description
The Devizes and Roundway War Memorial is a First World War memorial dedicated in 1922, designed by the architect Francis William Troup (1859-1941).
The memorial features a curved wall made of Doulting stone, set on a stepped plinth. It has a plain central archway with a cornice and blocking course, and a bronze urn on a stone pedestal is positioned within the arch. Flanking the central arch are panelled quadrant screen walls that end in piers. Metal reliefs of laurel wreaths are located at either end of the curved wall. On either side of the arch, there are three panels that hold bronze plaques listing the names of those who lost their lives.
The wall bears the following inscription:
REMEMBER / MEN OF DEVIZES / AND ROUNDWAY / WHO FELL / IN THE WAR 1914-1919 / ALSO / THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WAR / 1939-1945 / IN MEMORY OF THE / MEN AND WOMEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / SINCE 1945
Additionally, cast iron railings on stone footings enclose a small rectangular garden, with the War Memorial positioned at its center.
