Description
The Marsh Lane War Memorial, built in 1919 and altered after the Second World War, serves as a First World War memorial and boundary wall with gate and railings.
Constructed from sandstone and gritstone ashlar, the memorial is prominently located at the junction of Main Road and Ford Road, within a small gravelled and lawned area that is enclosed by a low boundary to the roadside.
The memorial features a multi-faceted pillar topped with a floriated cross. The pillar consists of two parts: the upper section is a V-grooved column with a splayed foot, topped by an octagonal tiered candle snuffer cap, while the lower section is an octagonal pedestal on a double plinth. Below the plinth, the pillar rests on an octagonal three-stepped base.
The pedestal's faces display inscriptions in block capital letters, with the headings in relief and the names incised in blackened lettering, reading: REMEMBER [NAMES]/ THE GREAT/ SACRIFICE [NAMES]/ 1914-1919 [NAMES]/ 1939 1945 [NAMES].
Additionally, the south perimeter of the site is enclosed by a low stone wall topped with decorative iron railings.
