Description
No. 8 Birley Hay is a cottage dating from the late 18th century. It is built from coursed rubble coal measures sandstone, featuring painted ashlar dressings, quoins, gable brick stacks, and a stone slated roof. The cottage has two storeys and two bays, with 19th-century casements set in the surrounds of former two-light flush mullioned windows. The central doorway is framed by a massive stone surround and lintels, leading to a plain planked door. There is a later single-storey extension to the east. The north elevation retains a two-light flush mullioned opening. This building is associated with the small industrial settlement that developed around the water-powered scythe and sickle works at Birley Hay.
