Description
West Handley Hall is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed squared coal measures sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings, quoins, moulded shell kneelers, coped gables, ashlar gable stacks, and a stone slated roof. The building has a T-plan layout and includes a rear stair tower.
The north elevation is two storeys high, with attics, and consists of two bays along with single-storey additions at each end. The main entrance is located at the east end, characterized by a massive surround and lintel. To the west, there is a 4-light recessed chamfer mullioned window with cast iron diamond lattice lights, all under a continuous hoodmould that formerly extended around the south-west corner, along with two 2-light windows above. An extension to the west features a 20th-century leaded casement window and a plain plank door beneath a simple lintel. The stair tower includes single and 2-light 17th-century windows at the half landings, each with plain dripmoulds above.
Inside, there is a massive grand hearth in the hall, with elaborately moulded jambs and a large lintel that is notably out of scale with the rest of the house. The newel stair features a 17th-century splat baluster staircase, which has been painted.
