Description

The Old Barns is a house that was formerly two farm outbuildings, dating from the late 16th century and late 17th century, which were converted in 1984. The building is constructed of coursed rubble coal measures sandstone with plain dressings and quoins, topped with Welsh slated roofs that have stone slate eaves and 20th-century metal flues. It has an L-plan layout, with the former two separate buildings now connected by a 20th-century extension.

The south range is two storeys high and has three bays, featuring a central doorway beneath a plain timber lintel, flanked by enlarged ventilation slits, now replaced with a glazed door. Inside, there are inserted partitions that do not obstruct the exposed late 17th-century queen strut tie beam trusses, which have straight windbraces on one side of each truss, supporting double purlins and a ridge purlin. The south gable end has inserted 20th-century openings.

The north range runs at right angles to the main range and dates from the late 16th century. It is a single storey with three bays, featuring two complete cruck trusses and the remains of a third in the west gable wall. The cruck trusses rest on projecting padstones on the south side, while the north side wall is built into an earth bank. These trusses include tie beams, yokes, and some windbraces, with a single purlin and ridge purlin. There are three doorways in the south wall, all with plain lintels, one of which is now blocked. A 20th-century link with a timber arcade is present at the front.
