Description

Marsh Lane Farmhouse is a house dating from 1681, with some alterations made in the 19th century and restoration in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble coal measures sandstone, featuring a shallow moulded plinth in part, coped gables with moulded kneelers, a central stone stack, and a concrete tiled roof. The building has a cruciform plan and includes two doorways, both located on the east-facing elevations.

The east elevation consists of two storeys with attics and three bays, with the central bay protruding as the eastern arm of the cruciform plan. The north bay has a doorway with an ashlar quoined surround that has a chamfer margin, a massive lintel, and a hoodmould with dropped ends that forms part of a stringcourse extending to the south gable. There are stacked 2-light chamfer mullioned windows to the east of the doorway; the ground floor window is beneath a hoodmould with dropped returns, while the upper window is deeper and possibly altered. The central gable features stacked 2-light chamfer mullioned windows on the ground, first, and attic floors, with the ground floor window's stringcourse interrupted at the window head. The first-floor window has a hoodmould with dropped ends and may also be altered. A shallow 2-light attic window is located beneath a hoodmould with dropped ends. The flanking walls also have 2-light chamfer mullioned windows.

The south bay contains a doorway at the angle of the main range and the advanced range, featuring a quoined surround with a chamfered margin that bears the inscription I.C.1681. The hoodmoulds are part of a moulded stringcourse. The building has 20th-century casements throughout, with diamond leaded lights, and there is a blocked inserted doorway in the north gable.
