Description

Moortop Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, with alterations and additions from the late 19th century. It is constructed from regularly coursed squared coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring gable brick stacks and slate roof coverings. The building has an L-plan layout, with an earlier range attached to the north end of the main range, which is a remnant of a larger 18th-century house.

The east elevation has three storeys and four bays, showcasing stacked glazing bar sash windows. The ground and first-floor windows have 4 x 3 panes, while the second-floor windows have 2 x 3 panes, all set beneath plain lintels. There is one altered window and one inserted window at the north end. The off-centre doorway features a plain door with a rectangular overlight and glazing bars.

The earlier range consists of two storeys and two bays, with stacked 3-light flush mullioned windows with glazing bars on the west end and a 2-light window on the east. The off-centre doorway is obscured by a pitched-roofed single-storey 20th-century half-glazed porch. The rear elevation of the three-storey range includes remnants of 18th-century flush mullioned windows. The original 18th-century farmhouse was substantial and extended further to the west.
