Description
Summerley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to 1605, with further work in the early 18th century and an extension in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, a central stone ridge stack, and a stone slated roof. The design centres on a lobby entrance.
The south elevation features two storeys and two bays. An off-centre doorway has a large quoined surround and lintel, topped by a hoodmould with label stops that extend over the window to the west. A weathered inscription on the lintel reads “A:G 1605(?)." A 20th-century half-glazed and panelled door occupies the entrance. The ground floor windows have four chamfered mullioned lights, while those on the first floor have three lights, all with hoodmoulds incorporating stops. The west gable features a stack of chamfered mullioned windows, of two and three lights.
A 19th-century range is located to the rear, with a single stack and 20th-century tripartite casements beneath heavy lintels. A 20th-century gabled porch, built in a 17th-century vernacular style, is on the east elevation.
Inside, the two main ground floor rooms have oak spine beams and joists, with 17th-century stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A principal hearth has a quoined surround, a massive lintel, and a small 17th-century spice cupboard with a 17th-century oak door. A parlour hearth has a cambered lintel. The house was refurbished between 1982 and 1984.
