Description

This is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with alterations and expansion in the early 17th century and the 19th century. Constructed of coursed squared coal measures sandstone with flush quoins, it has coped gables, moulded kneelers, gable ashlar ridge stacks with moulded drips, and stone slated roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with an older range to the west and a central lobby entrance range to the east, set at a right angle to the main range.

The south elevation of the older western range has two storeys and originally three bays, though the western bay may have been remodeled. A doorway, with a quoined surround and substantial lintel, sits in the angle between the two ranges, with the eastern quoins partially hidden by the later range. Above it are stacked, former recessed chamfer mullioned windows; the ground floor opening was originally five lights but now has a single surviving mullion, while the first floor opening was originally four lights, with all mullions removed. There are 20th-century casements in old stone surrounds. Further west is a blocked doorway, aligned with the stack, and a 19th-century stable doorway is located at the west end.

The east range, facing east, has two storeys and attics, with three bays. A plain central doorway gives access, with a 20th-century door. To the south of the doorway is a three-light chamfer mullioned window, and to the north is a 20th-century casement with transom lights beneath a deep lintel. The first floor has two two-light and one three-light chamfer mullioned windows, the central window being lower than the outer ones.

The south end elevation is roughcast and features a five-light recessed chamfer mullioned window with transoms on the ground floor and a four-light window with transoms on the first floor, both with dripmouldings. A three-light blocked recessed chamfer mullioned attic window is also present.

Inside, the farmhouse has substantial oak ceiling timbers and spine beams, with run-out stops. The east range contains two finely wrought stone hearths with massive lintels and chamfered surrounds, below well-made relieving arches.
