Description
The former cruck barn at Gosforth Farm is a late 16th-century building that has undergone alterations in the 19th century and was converted into a dwelling in 1983-1984. It is constructed from coursed rubble coal measures sandstone, featuring quoins and a low stone plinth, with plain gables and a stone slated roof. The barn has three bays and now stands at two storeys, having previously included overlofts.
The former central full-height opening, which has a quoined surround, has been modified with a 20th-century glazed screen. The remaining openings on the south elevation are 20th-century additions, including a lean-to on the west end. The east gable features a 19th-century doorway and flanking window openings with massive dressings and 20th-century glazing. Above the door, there is a stone-framed overloft doorway.
Inside, the barn retains two full cruck trusses, with a remnant of a third embedded in the west gable. The trusses rise full height from within the wall thickness and have spur ties at plate level. There is a collar and yoke beam, into which the blades are morticed, providing a horizontal platform for the ridge purlin. The roof features a single purlin design, with some surviving windbraces.
