Description
Rookery Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from coursed rubble coal measures sandstone and features quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a single gable stack that was rebuilt in the 20th century. The roof is stone slated.
The east elevation has two storeys and three bays, with an advanced porch at the north end covered by a catslide roof. There is an inserted doorway beneath a plain lintel with a 20th-century door, and a second inserted doorway at the south end, also beneath a plain lintel with a 20th-century door. To the north of this door, there is a 2-light and a 3-light recessed chamfer mullioned window, both with dripmoulds; the 3-light window extends around the advanced porch. On the first floor, there are two 2-light chamfer mullioned windows, with the mullions replaced in the 20th century, and 20th-century leaded lights throughout.
The south gable features stacked 2-light chamfer mullioned windows, including an attic light, all beneath dripmoulds. At the south-west corner, there are remains of a massive quoined doorway, with only the south-east quoins and half of the lintel still visible. The corner itself is not quoined.
