Description

Manor Court is a group of houses that were formerly a farm outbuilding, dating from the mid-17th century, with 19th-century alterations and converted between 1985 and 1986. The structure is built from coursed squared coal measures sandstone and features quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a combination of stone and Welsh slate roofing.

The taller five-bay range is located to the south and has a two-bay offshoot on the east side at the west end, while a two-bay range is at the north end. These two ranges are connected by a covered bay. The main range, facing east, is two storeys high with five bays. It includes a former threshing doorway now fitted with a 20th-century segmental arch above a glazed screen, as well as 2-light openings with 20th-century casements and stone heads.

Inside, the building has nine roof bays. The two bays flanking the threshing bay are divided into sub-bays by hammer beams, which feature ornamental pendant finials. The arched braces supporting these beams are morticed into wall posts that rest on shaped stone corbels. The principal trusses include collar and tie beams, supporting double through purlins with windbraces above the upper purlin.

At the south end, the offshoot is supported by full-height jowel posts that are braced both longitudinally and transversely. A tie beam connects the post to the offshoot wall plate, with a raking strut above supporting the offshoot rafter. The lower range at the north end has two doorways with massive lintels and quoined surrounds, as well as small single-light windows with 17th-century surrounds, all now fitted with 20th-century joinery. A 20th-century doorway has been inserted between the earlier doors. The covered bay extends the lower roof.

These buildings are part of the courtyard of Manor Farmhouse, which was historically associated with the Manor House. The original farmhouse was replaced in the 19th century by the current structure, which is not included in this listing.
