Description

The Waldron War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure commemorating the dead of the First World War and Second World War. It was created by an unknown designer and constructed in 1920 under the direction of a Miss Humblecrost, at a cost of £391 10s.

The memorial is made of Forest of Dean stone and is set within a square paved area, which is bordered by wooden posts at each corner. It features a Gothic-inspired design, taking the form of a large wheel cross with foliated ends, mounted on an octagonal shaft. This shaft stands on an octagonal drum plinth, which is supported by three octagonal steps. At the base of the cross, there is a decorative grape and vine motif. The plinth has inscribed arched top tablets on all sides, adorned with an inscribed flower motif. The main inscription reads: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THE PARISH OF WALDRON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR GOD, KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1918 AND 1939-1945 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The original inscription was updated to include those who died in the Second World War by adding an 'S' to 'WAR' and the dates '1939-1945' beneath the original text. A total of 54 names of the fallen from the First World War are inscribed on the remaining seven sides, while the 21 names from the Second World War are listed on a stone plaque mounted on the steps, aligned with the main inscription.

The memorial is significant for its careful Gothic Revival design and its historical importance, reflecting the profound impact of the world wars on the local community.
