Description
Meadowside House is a house dating from the 1860s, or possibly the 1840s, with remodelling in the 1860s. The exterior is stuccoed, with a scantle slate roof that is hipped except for the gable end of the axial wing behind the main entrance. Wide eaves have a cast-iron ogee gutter. Chimneys include a pair of chamfered stucco shafts over the right-hand wall and another over the rear wall of the main block.
The building has a double-depth plan with a two-room-deep service wing set at right angles to the rear middle. At the garden front, there are two reception rooms surrounded by a wide open verandah with a balcony above. Behind the left-hand reception room is an entrance hall, which likely leads to a central stair hall behind the front rooms. A projecting axial wing extends from the rear left. To the right, there is a recessed summer house with external steps, and a service wing at the far rear, with an entrance hall between the rooms.
The south garden front is symmetrical, featuring three windows (excluding a circa late 19th-century projecting bay window on the right) and a central domed niche. Original four-pane hornless sash windows are likely present in the first-floor openings. A pair of circa late 19th-century French windows with overlights are to the ground floor left, and a four-light bay window with a leaded overlight sits to the right. A five-bay cast-iron open verandah stretches across the front, with splayed corner bays and returns for two bays at either end. The verandah has column-turned stanchions, flat-headed arches with pierced spandrels and frieze, and a balcony with cross-braced balustrade above. To the right, the verandah front has been glazed to form a conservatory (circa late 19th century).
The west entrance front has a symmetrical three-window front to the recessed service wing on the left and a one-bay, one-bay, one-bay front on the right. The service wing has a central doorway with a panelled door and original 12-pane hornless sashes at the front, end, and rear. The main entrance front on the right has a panelled and glazed box porch with pilaster mullions, coloured glazing with marginal panes, overlights, and an entablature with dentils. A gable-ended bay is built forward on the left and has a canted bay window with pilaster mullions and dentilled entablature, topped with a tripartite window with pilaster mullions and a moulded cornice. A blind window sits to the right of the porch. Original hornless sashes with plate glass are present.
The interior has not been inspected, but it may retain features as complete as the interesting 19th-century exterior.
