Description

Nos. 88-94 on London Road in Chippenham is a row of four cottages, now converted into three dwellings, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. The cottages are constructed from limestone rubble with freestone dressings and quoins, topped with a stone slate roof and featuring brick stacks on the party walls and gable ends, although the left end is truncated. The buildings are two storeys high, with a two-window range for most, except for No. 90, which has a one-window range. The two central cottages, Nos. 90 and 92, project slightly forward and have shallower-pitched roofs, suggesting they may have been built later than the end cottages. The properties feature bracketed gutters, 20th-century doors, and two-light casement windows that were originally stone-mullioned. No. 88 on the left has rebated stone surrounds for its windows, while No. 94 on the right displays cyma moulding and remnants of stone mullions from its former two-light windows. Both ends have continuous hoodmoulds over the ground-floor windows and doors, most doors are adorned with chamfered architraves, and all have flat hoods with reeded edges supported by shaped stone brackets. Inside the two former cottages that have been combined into one dwelling, each originally had a two-bay roof with butt purlins, showcasing a thoughtfully planned layout typical of late 18th-century artisan cottages.
