Description
Albert Cottages and attached wall and gate piers are a house, originally built in the mid-18th century (before 1784), with later additions constructed in the early 19th century (before 1831) to the London Road frontage. The original part of the house is built of coursed squared limestone rubble with dressed quoins, and has a half-hipped roof covered in stone slates. Two stone stacks are located to the north of the main block. The later wings have painted ashlar and render finishes; the left wing has a stone slate roof and the right wing has double-Roman tiles.
The south front is symmetrical with a three-window arrangement and has two and three-light stone-mullioned windows on the first floor. The north front features an eight/eight-pane sash window and a four-panel door to the right wing, and a ten/ten-pane sash above paired six/six-pane sashes on the ground floor of the left wing. The interior of the cottages has not been inspected.
The north garden is enclosed by an approximately two-metre-high rubblestone wall, attached to the left side and extending forward for about ten metres towards the street. A partly demolished wall is on the right side. The front wall sweeps down boldly on both sides to central ashlar gate piers with pyramidal tops, which flank steps leading to the house. The gate piers are inscribed "Albert Cottages".
