Description
This early to mid-19th century house, later used as a shop, is located on London Road, Chippenham. The building is constructed of stretcher-bond red brick with a limestone ashlar facade on a rubblestone plinth, topped with a slate roof and brick stacks at the gable ends and rear of both wings. It has a three-unit plan with an addition to the left and two rear wings, alongside a later 19th-century wing to the left. Originally symmetrical with a three-window front, it now has a four-window frontage. The left-hand addition includes an 8/8-pane sash window with horns on the first floor, above a boarded window and planked door. Other windows are plate glass sashes in a Regency style with balconettes. The ground floor is currently boarded up. The original house features a fine cornice and a band of paterae. A mid-floor platband is continued across the front. Steps lead up to a flush six-panel door with glazed upper panels; a roll-edged architrave is flanked on the right by a blocked window and on the left by a blocked mid-19th-century semi-elliptical-plan shop window, which has moulded consoles close to the ground, a fascia, and a cornice. The interior of the building was not inspected.
