Description

This mid-18th century public house, now converted to sheltered housing, is located in Chippenham. It has a painted rendered exterior, a stone slate roof, and brick stacks to the gable ends. The building follows a double-depth plan, incorporating a 17th-century steep-pitched roof to the rear right wing. The front elevation is symmetrical with three windows per floor. It features a cornice, parapet, string course, and plinth, with raised surrounds to the first-floor windows, which contain late 19th-century plate-glass sashes and segmental arches with keystones. The ground floor contains three 20th-century plate-glass sash windows, replacing a 19th-century shop front that was previously recorded. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, in 1750 it was called The Joiners' Arms, by 1784 it was known as the Cooper's Arms, and by 1821 it had become a private dwelling.
