Description
23 and 24 The Causeway are a pair of mid-19th century houses made of limestone ashlar, featuring a coped slate roof and an ashlar ridge stack with a brick shaft along the party wall. The buildings have a double-depth plan and stand three storeys tall, with each house having a one-window range. There are platbands between the floors.
No. 23, located on the right, has 8/8-pane sash windows. It features a projecting bay window supported by brackets on the ground floor, which includes late 19th century paired 4/4 pane sash windows. A former doorway with edge-roll moulding to the right has been filled with 20th century glazing. The current entrance is located in the right return, with small windows above. A thickened wall that is set back on the right return, which does not reach the gable, suggests that part of this house was demolished, likely due to the construction of the chapel at the rear right, known as No. 22, which later became the Spinkes Printing Works.
No. 24, on the left, has a 20th century door with roll-moulding to the left and 20th century aluminium windows. The interior has not been inspected. This pair of houses is a relatively late but significant part of the group of listed buildings on The Causeway. No. 23 was listed on October 19, 1979.
