Description
27 and 28 The Causeway are a pair of houses built in the early to mid 18th century. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a shallow-pitched gambrel roof with a rendered stone stack on the left and a brick stack on the right gable ends. The houses have a double-depth plan and are two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical four-window range.
The exterior includes an eaves cornice and a ground-floor string course at the level of continuous hoods on brackets above the doors and lintels. The windows are cyma-moulded stone mullioned, with three-light windows on the outer ranges and paired single lights in the centre. The central windows have 4/4-pane sashes flanked by 8-pane fixed lights, while the single lights also feature sashes. There is a small window on the left return where the adjoining house, No. 29, is set back. The interior has not been inspected. This building is an early example of the semi-detached plan, with the earliest examples dating from the early 18th century.
