Description
31 The Causeway is a house dating from the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a double-Roman gambrel roof with a 19th-century hipped dormer and no stacks. The building has a single-unit plan, which was formerly a two-unit design.
The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a one-window range. It has an eaves cornice, a string course at ground-floor lintel level, and a plinth. The attic has a 19th-century three-light window, while the first floor features cyma-moulded three-light stone-mullioned windows with a central mid to late 19th-century sash window. There is a hood on brackets above a cyma-moulded architrave that leads to a half-glazed 19th-century four-panel door on the right, along with an 8/8-pane sash window in the centre.
Historically, this building was originally a two-bay house, but the bay on the left (north) was demolished to create a passage to the rear, which is now filled by No.31A, a property not included in this listing. The interior has not been inspected.
