Description

A pair of cottages located in The Butts, Chippenham, dating from the mid to late 18th century. They are constructed of painted limestone rubble with a double-Roman tile roof and a brick stack to the right gable end. Originally planned with a single-unit layout for each cottage, they now include 20th-century extensions. The exterior originally displayed a symmetrical two-window arrangement. Paired central chamfered architraves marked the positions of former doors, which have now been blocked. Number 44 has an entrance in its left-hand extension, while the entrance to Number 45 is situated in the right return and features 20th-century windows. Number 44 retains cyma-moulded stone-mullioned windows with 19th-century small-paned casements, a three-light window on the first floor and a two-light window on the ground floor. The interior of the cottages was not inspected. The wider area of The Butts was historically a location for archery practice.
